Activities of the Education Unit

The education unit belongs to the Church and Society Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria. It is charged with fostering the implementation of the Nigerian Catholic-Education Policy. It also monitors the development of Catholic education in Nigeria at various levels. The unit represents the Church at relevant meetings and conferences organized by various government and NGOs. Collaborating with the Directors and Secretaries of education at the diocesan level also forms part of the education unit’s responsibilities

Education Unit Activities:
  • Monitoring the implementation of the education policy of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in all Catholic educational institutions in Nigeria.
  • Monitoring governments’ educational policies and practices and updating the CBCN regularly
  • Organizing national education summits nationally every four years
  • Monitor the development of Catholic Education in Nigeria at various levels.
  • Advise the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria CBCN on relevant education policies and matters requiring the attention of the Church.
  • Collate, analyze and keep up to date data of Catholic Schools in the 55 dioceses in Nigeria.
  • Identify and make contact with key persons, organizations, Federal Ministry of Education, National University Commission, other relevant government agencies and NGOs working in the field of education.
  • Represent the Catholic Church at relevant meetings and Conferences organized by government and NGOs as the need arises.
  • Coordinate quality assurance activities in Catholic Schools in Nigeria through collaboration with Directors and Secretaries of education at the diocesan level.
  • With the permission of the chairman of the Unit, call meetings of the Board and take minutes.
  • Prepare annual work plan and present quarterly reports to CBCN Administrative Board.
